Chamberlain, Halladay square off north of the border

07/11/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Recent phenom meets established ace on the mound tonight when the Toronto Blue Jays welcome the New York Yankees for the first test of a three-game weekend series at Rogers Centre.

Young right-hander Joba Chamberlain gets the call for the Yankees in his eighth start since emerging from bullpen duty.

The 22-year-old fireballler had made 19 relief appearances last season and 19 more this year before starting for the first time against the Blue Jays on June 3 in the Bronx.

In that game, he allowed a hit and an earned run in 2 1/3 innings at the beginning of a pitch-count extending process.

He tossed 4 1/3 innings in his subsequent start and has gone at least five innings in four of his last five assignments, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.57 earned run average as a starter.

Chamberlain will miss facing one of the offensive leaders in the Toronto lineup after it was announced Thursday that Vernon Wells will miss the next four-to-six weeks with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring.

Wells suffered the injury while stealing third base in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game with Baltimore.

On the mound for Toronto will be right-hander Roy Halladay, who has won six of seven decisions since a May 9 loss at Cleveland dropped him to 3-5 on the year.

He ran his career mark against the Yankees to 11-5 while facing Chamberlain on June 3, allowing six hits and two runs in six innings of Toronto's 9-3 win.

In his last start, on July 5 in Anaheim, Halladay allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings of the Blue Jays' 7-5 defeat of the Los Angeles Angels.

He is 4-2 in seven road starts this season with a 3.59 ERA in 52 2/3 innings.

On Thursday in Toronto, Adam Lind's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Blue Jays to a 6-5 win over the Orioles, as Toronto completed a three-game sweep.

Lind also had three hits and two runs scored while David Eckstein notched two RBI for the Blue Jays, who have won four of their last five games and seven of their last 11 overall.

Shawn Camp (2-1), who pitched a scoreless top of the ninth, earned the win.

In Pittsburgh, Nate McLouth hit a two-run home run and Paul Maholm threw eight solid innings, as the Pirates beat the Yankees, 4-2, in a makeup game.

The Yankees split their first two games with the Pirates, but the finale was rained out on June 26. The contest actually got under way, but was called in the top of the third inning with the Yankees leading 3-1.

Bobby Abreu had two RBI for the Yankees, who saw their four-game win streak come to an end. Mike Mussina lasted six frames and gave up two runs on nine hits while fanning five batters. Jose Veras (2-1) took the loss as he gave up two runs in the seventh.

The Yanks have won four of six from the Yanks this season.
