Indians try to continue mastery of Devil Rays

Baseball Betting Lines

04/21/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Paul Byrd hopes for a repeat performance of his first official start of the season when the veteran takes the mound tonight for the Cleveland Indians, who play the second of three straight contests with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.

After having a potential victory nullified by a freak snowstorm back on April 6, Byrd went out and threw six scoreless innings to lead the Indians to a 4-0 win over Chicago last Saturday. The 36-year-old scattered five hits and struck out five while issuing just two walks.

Byrd also did not allow a run in his weather-shortened outing against Seattle and was working on a no-hitter when the game had to be called due to the severe conditions.

The well-traveled right-hander has made five previous starts against Tampa Bay and is 1-1 with a 5.70 earned run average versus the Devil Rays. Byrd is 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in two career appearances at Tropicana Field.

He will attempt to give Cleveland a seventh consecutive win over Tampa Bay dating back to last season. The Indians maintained their success against the Rays with a hard-fought triumph on Friday, as Travis Hafner singled home Andy Marte with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Tribe to a 4-3 decision.

Hafner socked a two-run homer earlier on the night and finished 3-for-3 with three runs batted in for Cleveland, which snapped a three-game losing streak and rebounded from a disappointing 8-6 loss in New York on Thursday.

Carl Crawford went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and B.J. Upton homered for the Devil Rays, who have dropped three of four.

Roberto Hernandez (1-1) picked up the win with a scoreless inning in relief of starter C.C. Sabathia, who allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and struck out eight over the first seven frames.

Joe Borowski tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to record his sixth save, one night after the Indians' closer was rocked for six ninth-inning runs against the Yankees.

With Friday's win, Cleveland improved to 6-2 over their last eight games at Tropicana Field.

Jae Seo, who is coming off his best outing of the young season, gets the call tonight for Tampa Bay. The Korean righty took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning Sunday in Minnesota, but gave up a pair of runs during the frame and wound up with a no decision.

Seo was hit hard in his previous start, when he was charged with 10 runs -- five earned -- on eight hits and lasted just three innings in an April 10 loss at Texas. He is yet to win in three appearances this season and enters the contest with a lackluster 7.11 ERA and 28 hits allowed in 16 1/3 innings.

The 29-year-old also has never defeated Cleveland over the course of his career. In three prior starts against the Tribe, Seo is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA.
