Mariners, Twins continue set at Safeco Field

Baseball Betting Lines

08/14/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - After coming through with another thrilling victory on Monday, the Seattle Mariners will attempt to continue their recent roll in tonight's middle test of a three-game set with the struggling Minnesota Twins from Safeco Field.

Seattle posted its sixth win in seven games in dramatic fashion during last night's series opener, as Richie Sexson's leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Mariners to a 4-3 triumph.

Sexson socked a 1-0 pitch from Matt Guerrier (1-4) over the wall in left- center field to pull red-hot Seattle within three games of the first-place Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the American League West standings. The slugging first baseman also had a two-run double in the first inning.

The Mariners, who have now won 12 of their last 16 overall contests, also remained tied with the New York Yankees for the lead in the AL wild card race.

Jose Vidro finished 3-for-4 with an RBI single for Seattle, while starting pitcher Felix Hernandez held Minnesota to one run on four hits over the first six innings.

Hernandez was denied a victory when Minnesota's Joe Mauer smacked a game-tying two-run double off reliever Sean Green in the seventh inning. J.J. Putz picked up the win with a scoreless top of the ninth.

Johan Santana was also sharp for the Twins, as the reigning AL Cy Young winner allowed three runs on seven hits through seven innings.

Mauer ended 3-for-4 in the loss, Minnesota's fifth in a row and seventh in eight games.

The Twins figure to face another tough challenge tonight in Seattle scheduled starter Horacio Ramirez, who has been outstanding when pitching at home this season.

In seven Safeco Field starts, Ramirez is 6-0 with a 3.24 earned run average and has yielded just three home runs over 41 2/3 total innings. The left- hander hasn't been nearly as good on the road, although he did manage to record a win in Baltimore his last time out.

Ramirez was touched for seven runs and issued five walks in five innings against the Orioles on Thursday, but received plenty of offensive support in Seattle's 13-8 decision.

The former Atlanta Brave will be making his first career appearance against Minnesota tonight.

The Twins hand the ball this evening to hard-luck youngster Matt Garza, who has pitched far better than his 1-3 record would indicate.

Garza has given up just seven earned runs and 32 hits over 37 innings in seven games (six starts) since being recalled from Triple-A in early July. The 23- year-old has also struck out 35 batters in that impressive stretch.

He suffered another tough loss Thursday in Kansas City. Garza held the Royals to one run and four hits over 6 2/3 innings, but wound up on the short end of a 1-0 decision.

The former first-round pick has never previously faced Seattle, but has allowed only two runs in 20 2/3 innings on the road this year.

Minnesota did sweep a three-game series at Safeco Field in April and is 8-3 in the last 11 encounters between these teams.
