08/14/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chicago White Sox begin a week-long West Coast road trip tonight with the first of three consecutive meetings with the Oakland Athletics at McAfee Coliseum.
Chicago took two of three games from the A's at the Coliseum back in April but has generally struggled as the visitor in this series. The White Sox are just 5-13 in Oakland since the beginning of the 2004 season and hadn't won a series there since 2000 prior to those two April wins.
The White Sox are 4-2 this season against the Athletics, who return home after splitting a four-game set at defending American League champion Detroit over the weekend. Oakland drew even with a 7-2 victory over the Tigers in Monday's finale.
The A's banged out 12 hits in support of starting pitcher Chad Gaudin (9-8), who allowed just two runs and four hits while recording a career-high nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Shannon Stewart led the offense with four hits and three runs scored, while Marco Scutaro collected three RBI for Oakland. Jack Cust finished 3-for-4 and Mark Ellis added a two-run homer on the evening.
Chicago attempts to rebound from two straight home losses to Seattle, including a 6-0 setback on Sunday. Jeff Weaver went the distance on a five- hitter and the Mariners belted three home runs off Sox starter John Danks to cruise to victory.
The one bright spot for the White Sox came in the ninth inning, when closer Bobby Jenks set an American League record and tied an MLB mark by retiring his 41st batter in succession. Jim Barr set the original mark while with the San Francisco Giants in 1972.
Danks (6-10) was roughed up for six runs on eight hits over just 4 1/3 innings.
Chicago, which is a respectable 28-31 as the visitor this year, will play the Mariners three times in Seattle following this series.
Jon Garland tries to get the White Sox back on track when he takes the mound in tonight's opener. The lanky right-hander is coming off a no decision against Cleveland on Wednesday in which he permitted three runs over seven innings of work.
That was a colossal improvement over Garland's previous start, when he was rocked for eight runs and nine hits before being yanked after 1 1/3 innings in an August 2 appearance at Yankee Stadium.
Garland is just 3-7 with a 4.44 earned run average in 12 career starts against Oakland, but twirled seven shutout innings to defeat the A's in the Coliseum on April 10.
The Athletics counter with Lenny DiNardo, who takes aim at a fourth consecutive winning decision tonight. The left-hander evened his season record at 6-6 after holding Texas to three runs over six innings in Oakland's 6-3 victory last Wednesday.
DiNardo has allowed three or less runs in four of five starts during his current unbeaten streak.
This will be the 27-year-old's first career start against the White Sox, but he has faced them three times previously in relief. Two of those appearances have come this season and DiNardo has not yielded a run in 5 2/3 innings over that pair of games.

In what should be an outstanding Saturday of March Madness betting action, the top four teams in the South and West Regions square off in what should be extremely close match-ups. Three of the four teams are coming off extremely close games on Thursday evening, only UCLA won semi comfortably over Pitt 64-55.
Ohio State is coming off their second game in a row where in all reality they should have lost. Of course that doesn’t matter now since the name of the game is “survive and advance” but as the tournament continues, they can’t afford to keep getting down to their opponents early. Kansas also avoided a scare by holding off a scrappy Southern Illinois squad. In the third thrilling game of the evening Memphis pulled off the minor upset (+3.5) despite being the higher seed to Texas A&M.
Although the spreads are fairly small for Saturday’s games, MySportsbook.com continue to bet against the underdogs. Despite OSU’s two scares, 86% of the “betting public” feels the Buckeyes (-1.5) have what it takes to make the Final Four. Greg Oden needs to stay out of foul trouble; the Buckeyes are a completely different team when he is on the court. Memphis definitely has the athleticism and length to match-up with OSU. Of Memphis’ five leading minute earners, the shortest of the bunch is 6’5”. Each team has a very effective defense; Memphis surrenders 62.3 PPG whereas the Buckeyes give up only 61 PPG. With those type of numbers, it isn’t surprising that Memphis covered the UNDER almost 69% of the time this season. As a favorite, OSU has covered the UNDER almost 66% of the time over the last three seasons. The major concern for Memphis which is magnifies this time of the year is their brutal foul shooting (62%). This season, OSU is 17-11 ATS versus teams with a winning record and 7-2 ATS in all tournament games. Memphis has been an extremely reliable cover in tournament play in recent years with a 23-8 ATS record over the last three seasons.
UCLA vs. Kansas
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, UCLA will play in a role which they are very unfamiliar with that of the underdog. Only twice this season have they been getting points from the handicappers and both times they covered. Over the last three seasons UCLA is a reliable 23-7 ATS in this unfamiliar role. UCLA has not fared well against Big 12 opponents recently going 1-7 ATS since 1997. Giving up only 59.6 PPG, UCLA will definitely look to do what they do best: keep this game as low scoring as possible. Their defense has been especially tough during the tournament. UCLA opponents have been able to muster up only 48.7 PPG while shooting a combined 34.5% from the field. UCLA definitely has a challenge at hand with a Kansas team that is capable of putting points on the board in bunches. As a team, they average 79 PPG and shoot an impressive 49.6% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc. During the tournament Kansas has been “lights out” from the field having shot 56.2%.
