08/09/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Phil Hughes tries for win No. 14 this afternoon when the New York Yankees go for a series triumph in the finale of their four-game set with the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.
Hughes, who will tie teammate CC Sabathia, Tampa's David Price and Minnesota's Carl Pavano for the American League lead in wins with a victory today, defeated Toronto on Wednesday, holding the Blue Jays to a run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings to improve to 13-4 on the year to go along with a 3.96 earned run average.
"It was a battle for sure," said Hughes, who failed to get past the sixth inning for the third time in his last four starts. "I was able to make good pitches with guys on base and get out with a win."
The victory upped Hughes' mark during the day to 5-0 in six starts.
Hughes did not get a decision the last time he faced the Red Sox, but is 1-2 lifetime against them with a 6.48 ERA in 10 games, four of which have been starts.
Dustin Moseley had originally been scheduled to start today's finale, but everyone was moved up a day when A.J. Burnett was scratched with back spasms. Moseley was terrific on short notice, while Derek Jeter further etched his name in the record books in New York's 7-2 win on Sunday.
Jeter punctuated a five-run fifth inning with a two-run double and also singled home a run in the second to surpass fellow Yankee legend Babe Ruth to claim sole possession of 39th place on baseball's all-time hits list.
"It means a lot to this organization. Obviously, Babe Ruth means a lot to baseball," Jeter said. "Any time you get a chance to pass him at anything it's special."
Lance Berkman had three hits, scored twice and knocked in a run for AL East- leading New York, which moved 2 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay in the division standings after the Rays were nearly no-hit by Toronto's Brandon Morrow on Sunday. Tampa has dropped five in a row.
Moseley (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings and left to a standing ovation.
"It meant a lot for the fans to do that for me and welcome me like that as they have early on," Moseley said. "It will be a memory for a long time."
Bill Hall homered for the Red Sox, who are now seven games behind the Yankees. Josh Beckett (3-2) was tagged for seven runs and a season-high 11 hits in just 4 2/3 innings.
"They're certainly not afraid to work the count or hit deep in the count," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of the Yankee batters. "That's what they do well when they're on their game. Regardless of what the count is, when you leave the ball over the middle they hurt you."
The Red Sox hope Jon Lester can turn things around in this afternoon's finale, as he enters the contest with a personal four-game losing streak. His latest loss came on Wednesday against Cleveland, which reached him for four runs (two earned) and seven hits in five innings, dropping him to 11-7 on the year, while raising his ERA to 3.07.
"There's nothing mechanical, nothing physical, nothing like that," said Lester, who is 4-1 with a 4.01 ERA against the Yankees in his career. "Obviously I'd like to be on the other side of the column."
New York has won seven of its 11 meetings with the Red Sox this season and is 13-6 in its last 19 at home against its bitter rivals.

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook
Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds. The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.
Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.
Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).
